After almost four decades as a staunch supporter of the creditunion industry, a former board chairman of the NorthCarolina Credit Union League has stepped down as manager andCEO of the $37 million Blue Flame Credit Union in Charlotte.

Ben Hill,who had served as manager/CEO of the 3,800-member Blue Flame since1990 and chairman of the league from 2006 to 2010, retired June28.

Under Hill's leadership, Blue Flame experienced dramatic growthin many key areas, including assets, shares, loans and capital,said Jeff Hardin, the league's director of communications.

Hardin said Hill has also been a key advocate on the politicalfront, having made many trips to Washington, D.C., and Raleigh overthe years to support the industry. He is a past member of the boardof directors for the Carolinas Credit Union Foundation and wasappointed by former N.C. Governor Jim Martin to serve on the N.C.Credit Union Commission from 1992 to 1995.

In addition, Hill shared his knowledge internationally byserving in a credit union Spanish Immersion Program in Queretaro,Mexico in 2007.

Hill, who received a MBA from Duke University and majored inbusiness and finance at the University of North Carolina at ChapelHill, recently said in an article on the league's website that he has no firm plans, buthopes to stay connected to credit unions in some way.

“I'd still like to serve in some capacity, maybe teaching at thelocal community college or doing something with credit unions inthe future,” he added.
