Southern Mass Credit Union is mourning the loss of longtimedirector John S. Mitchell, who has passed away at the age of84.

A dedicated board member of the Fairhaven, Mass.-based credit union for more than 25 years,Mitchell served on various committees lending his talent mostrecently to the audit committee, the credit union said.

He has been credited with being instrumental in the research ofa location for a full service branch in Fall River, which also ledto the $190 million, 10,300-member credit union's drive-up ATM atOak Grove Avenue and New Boston Road.

Board Chairman David Darmofal and CEO Daniel Waltz said in astatement: “John will be truly missed as a valued board member ofSouthern Mass Credit Union. He was an excellent auditcommittee member. He represented the membershipextremely well, especially the members from the greater Fall RiverCommunity. We will miss John's insight and expertisegreatly.”

Mitchell also was on the board of the Fall River AffordableHousing Corp., and was a member of the Patrick Brennan Club, theFall River Clover Club and the Thaddeus Kosciuszko Men's Club.
