StateEmployees' Credit Union has contracted with Diebold to upgrade its1,100 ATMs to more efficient, lower-cost machines, 65% of whichwill take deposits without requiring envelopes, the company andcredit union said.

The 1.8 million member, $26.5 billion credit union in Raleigh,N.C., makes its statewide ATM fleet available to the public withoutcharging fees.

This fee-free aspect tends to mean that its ATMs get a lot oftraffic and need frequent re-supplying, according to ATMmanufacturer Diebold, which announced the sale.

The new deposit automation-enabled Diebold ATMs will help reducere-supplying visits, as envelope-free deposits will postautomatically to consumers' accounts without additional processing,the vendor said.

“Diebold's deposit automation technology will help todrastically reduce the frequency of our vendor cash managementtrips,” said Leanne Phelps, SECU senior vice president, cardservices.

“This efficiency will result in significant cost and timesavings that will help SECU better serve our members, whiledelivering an improved consumer experience at the ATM,” Phelpssaid.

SECU's new deposit automation-enabled terminals offer enhancedefficiency and convenience for ATM users. The ATMs allow consumersto complete intuitive, teller-like cash and check deposits andreceive receipts via email, if desired, said Ohio-basedDiebold.

Consumers also benefit from the ATMs delivering the industry'sfastest transaction time for a typical deposit – up to 30 banknotes and 10 checks in less than 60 seconds, the companyclaimed.

In April, 2012, SECU reported that its fee-free ATMs saved NorthCarolinians $8.4 million annually.
