A new Kaiser Health Foundation tracking poll finds only one in10 consumers are getting information about the Affordable Care Act from their employers, even though openenrollment for new health care coverage options under ACA is justsix months away.

The tracking poll also found that only 3% of consumers said thatinformation they get about ACA is the “most important source” ofnews and information about the health care law, otherwise known atObamacare.

By Jan.1, 2014, employers that have more than 50 full-timeemployees will be required to provide health insurance or pay afine. Employers that don't provide health insurance are supposed toinform employees about online health insurance exchanges where theycan purchase a policy. These exchanges are scheduled to go live inOctober.

About 40% of consumers said they are getting their ACAinformation from friends and family, and 66% of consumers said theyare getting information about the health care law from mainstreammedia (newspapers, radio and online news, cable and broadcastTV).

|

The Kaiser poll also found much of the public remainsconfused about the status of the law even though it has receivedwidespread media coverage.

Among other key findings of the new poll:

  • Four in 10 Americans (42%) are unaware that the ACA is stillthe law of the land, including 12% who believe the law has beenrepealed by Congress, 7% who believe it has been overturned by theSupreme Court, and 23% who say they don't know enough to say whatthe status of the law is.
  • About half the public (49%) says they do not have enoughinformation about the health reform law to understand how it willaffect their own family.
  • The share of the public that says they lack enough informationto understand how the ACA will affect their family is higherbetween the two groups the law is likely to benefit most – theuninsured (58% of whom say they lack enough information) andlow-income households (56%).

The tracking poll was designed and analyzed by public opinionresearchers at the Kaiser Family Foundation and was conducted April15-20 from a nationally representative random digit dial (landlineand mobile) telephone sample of 1,203 adults ages 18 and older.
