Credit unions with offices in the northwest Boston suburbs whereone Boston bombing suspect was killed late last night are closed asordered by area police, said Rob Kimmett, senior vice president ofmarketing with the Massachusetts Credit Union League.

Kimmett said both Governor Deval Patrick and Boston police haveasked businesses in the affected suburbs, as well as within Bostoncity limits, to remain closed today. Residents have also been puton lockdown and asked to stay in their homes.

The Massachusetts league office, located some 30 miles west ofBoston, is open today, Kimmett said.

According to a notice posted on its website, the MIT Federal Credit Union is closed today. The $363 millioncampus-based credit union is located in Technology Square, within acouple blocks of last night's on-campus shooting of a campus policeofficer.

At the $290 million City of Boston Credit Union, Vice Presidentof Operations Cathy McCormack-Mullen's voice mail message informscallers that all three of its branches are closed. That messageconflicts with information posted on the credit union's website,which states that only the City Hall branch was closed and wouldsoon reopen. An employee who answered the phone at the creditunion's Dorchester Branch said the institution made the decision toclose its locations just before 10 a.m.

NCUA Public Affairs Specialist John Fairbanks said the agency isin the process of contacting Boston-area credit unions to assesshow many have been affected by the police activity.
