What do Americans want from their tax dollars? Affordable healthcare, for one.

If Americans could choose how the government spends their taxdollars, they'd designate affordable health care (38%) asthe top priority, according to a new tax survey released by TDAmeritrade.

The desire for more affordable health care also increases withage, the survey finds. While 35% of Gen Y most want affordablehealth coverage, 38% of Gen X and 44% of baby boomers say thesame.

Job creation is also a top priority for tax dollars (36%), as isimproving the quality of public education (24%) and improving thequality of health care (24%).

“Over the last quarter, slow and steady job growth andimprovements in the housing market have Americans feeling moreoptimistic that the economy is on the rebound, but they also wantthe government to focus on the things that impact them most,” saidCarrie Braxdale, managing director, investor services at TDAmeritrade.

“And as more and more baby boomers enter retirement, quality andaffordable health care will continue to be a growing concern amongAmericans,” Braxdale said.

Women were more adamant about tax dollars going to health carethan men, who most cited job creation. According to the Departmentof Labor, women make about 80% of the health care decisions fortheir families.

“Women also typically live longer than men, so it's notsurprising to see that they want their tax dollars being used toimprove health care and make it more affordable,” Braxdalesaid.
