Students at Carson High School in Carson City, Nev., will now be able to get a student-designed debit card when they open a checking account at the Greater Nevada Credit Union branch in the school.
The 45,000-member, $445 million GVCU has had a branch in the school since 1996, which it uses to promote financial education and vocational training. Students enrolled in a class on banking at the high school, which is taught by Greater Nevada staff, run the branch.
The credit union said 60 students participated in a design contest for the card and the top three designers were asked to meld their designs and to make sure the card design met Visa's requirements for debit cards which carry its brand.
“Contests like the debit card design pique students’ interest in something they may not otherwise think about,” said Teresa Breeden, Carson High School engineering, drafting, and art instructor.
“Plus, we have our very own debit card design now, which should continue creating awareness of the student checking account and other financial resources available right here on campus,” Breeden said.
Any Carson High School student age 16 or older can apply for the new card and its accompanying checking account with a parent’s permission.
