The $5 billion Bethpage Federal Credit Union in Bethpage, N.Y. hasraised more than $104,000 to aid Hurricane Sandy victims.

In addition to donating $25,000 to the American Red Cross afterthe natural disaster devastated the New York tri-state area,Bethpage FCU established a disaster relief fund in November. Moneywas donated by credit union members, and donations from localbusinesses were matched by the credit union.

“With the help of several generous Long Island businesses andBethpage members, we were able to help make a substantial donationto the United Way of Long Island to help our friends and familiesget back on their feet,” said Kirk Kordelski, president/CEO of Bethpage FCU.

For example, Runner's Edge, the Farmingdale, N.Y.-basedspecialty running store, raised $28,560. Beyond donating aportion of sales, Runner's Edge organized various fundraisingefforts including the “Help the Victims Fun Run” planned with theGreater Long Island Running Club, which drew 300 runners and helpedraise approximately $9,000.

“Long Island is our home, and home to many of ourcustomers. We are happy to do whatever we can to support ourneighbors during this difficult time,” said Bob Cook, owner ofRunner's Edge. “We are thrilled to have contributed the moneyto Bethpage's Disaster Relief Fund, where Bethpage matched ourdonation.”

What's more, a Raleigh, N.C. marathon, organized by JimMicheels, owner of retail store Running Outfitters, raised $10,000for the disaster fund. Many also contributed money reservedfor bus transportation to the New York City Marathon, which wascancelled following the storm.
