Javelin: Credit Unions Besting Community Banks in Mobile Banking

Credit unions are winning in the fight to gain traction in mobile banking.  That is the big takeaway from a new report by Javelin Strategy & Research.

In its research, California-based Javelin looked at mobile banking offerings at the four largest banks, top 10 large regional banks, top 10 community banks, and top 10 credit unions, by deposit size.  It concluded that nine of the top 10 credit unions offer some kind of mobile banking, while three of the top 10 community banks do not offer any kind of mobile banking.

Credit unions considered in the research include Alliant, American Airlines FCU, Apple, Boeing Employees, Golden 1, Navy Federal, Pentagon Federal, San Diego County, Schools First, Security Service, and State Employees’ Credit Union.

Javelin noted: “Among top 10 credit unions, 50% offer the triple play, that is, mobile web, app, and text banking. The percentage of consumers using mobile banking at credit unions is only 19%.“

Javelin added: “There is still room for credit unions to grow, as 80% of the largest regional banks provide all three services and adoption increased to 28%.”
