A 20-foot U-Haul truck filled with donated clothing, shoes and non-perishable food collected by NCUA employees at the agency’s Alexandria, Va. office arrived at the New Jersey Credit Union League Friday for distribution to credit union employees, volunteers and members displaced by Hurricane Sandy.

The league said in a Friday release after news of Hurricane Sandy’s major effects on New Jersey broke, NCUA Chairman Debbie Matz contacted the New Jersey Credit Union League with plans to collect clothing for those in need. The collection began Nov. 2.

Buddy Gill, the NCUA’s senior strategic communications and external relations adviser, drove the truck from Washington to Hightstown, N.J.

"We are so grateful to the agency. NCUA Chairman Debbie Matz very quickly reached out to us to extend help, and she and NCUA delivered," said NJCUL President/CEO Paul Gentile. "I couldn't believe how packed NCUA's truck was with clothing, water and dry goods. They did an amazing job. It took the League staff over an hour to unload because there was so much.

NJCUL staff also collected clothing, blankets, pillows, and canned goods, and Rutgers FCU also made a donation of clothing and food to the lot. New Jersey credit unions interested in distributing the donations to people and communities in need can contact the League to coordinate a pick-up date and time next week.

"We will now quickly get these goods out to those most impacted by the storm. It will bring relief to displaced families. On behalf of all New Jersey credit unions, we thank NCUA for their extraordinary effort,” Gentile said
