Hurricane Sandy: NCUA Says Hampered CUs Down to Double Digits

The NCUA has updated its list of credit unions affected by Hurricane Sandy, shrinking it considerably as credit unions have restored operations.

Public Affairs Specialist John Fairbanks said of the 838 credit unions initially affected by the storm, 729 were fully operational as of Monday afternoon.

Three credit unions in New York remain closed or not operational. In New Jersey, the hardest hit state, 31 credit unions remain closed, 24 are not operational and 11 have yet to verify their status with the NCUA.

Fairbanks said areas in New Jersey still struggling to recover from the storm include parts of Monmouth, Union, Hunterdon and Middlesex Counties, as well as areas of the City of Newark.

Public transportation is still down in some areas, which has affected credit union staffing and accessibility, he said. In addition, in some areas phone and internet are still down, roadways remain blocked and fuel is in short supply.

And handful of credit unions remain closed or non-operational in Pennsylvania. However, the list no longer includes any affected credit unions in Virginia or West Virginia.

The updated list is available on the NCUA’s website.
