When Hurricane Sandy makes landfall, its slow-moving track could close the stock exchanges Tuesday.

The New York Stock Exchange, NASDAQ and the CME Group, which operates the New York Mercantile Exchange, are all closed today. However, electronic trading is scheduled to continue with the NYSE, according to officials.

Located in downtown Manhattan where mandatory evacuations were ordered over the weekend, the NYSE said it has not closed due to inclement weather since Hurricane Gloria occurred in 1985.

Given the size and scope of Hurricane Sandy, the NYSE and other major exchanges may close for business on Tuesday, officials have said.
