Leagues in New York, Rhode Island and North Carolina were amongthe organizations warning credit unions to batten down for thecoming storm.

Hurricane Sandy is expected to make landfall by early Tuesdaysomewhere along the Mid-Atlantic coast and combine with winter-likeweather coming from the west to rain and wind that could causeheavy damage and knock power to millions.

“We'll be in contact with credit unions during the storm and inthe aftermath to assess the impact,” said Bonnie Sklar, publicrelations coordinator for the Credit Union Association of New Yorkin Albany. “And we encourage credit unions to reach out to us ifthey have been impacted the storm.”

Sklar said the CUANY will be ready to coordinate assistance andorganize resources as needed. In previous natural disasters, theassociation has helped credit unions get generators to providepower for credit union branches and raised funds to help creditunions with immediate clean up expenses.

New England is another destination for Sandy. “Obviously, we areaware of the potential disruptions the extreme weather than cause.It's sort of a fact of life here in the Northeast,” said RobKimmett, senior vice president of marketing for the Credit UnionAssociation of Rhode Island. “We know that credit unions have theirdisaster recovery plans in place. We'll be on site here at theassociation and be ready to help out if anything does happen.”

In North Carolina, they are bracing for the storm and hope thedamage is minimal.

“While we expect a good deal of rain in the eastern partof the state, our hope is that the storm will stay far enough outto sea to limit the amount of wind damage in North Carolina,” saidJeff Hardin, spokesman for the North Carolina Credit Union Leaguein Raleigh. “But at this point, we will have to hope for the bestand wait to see how the storm tracks the next few days.”
