Meriwest Credit Union announced it has turned on bill pay inside its mobile banking app and, said community relations manager Greg Meyer, adoption has been brisk.
Meriwest has promoted the new bill pay feature in an email blast to members. The technology was provided to Meriwest by Access Softek, said Meyer. That company claims some 175 mobile banking customers.
Apps for iPhone and Android were released earlier by Meriwest. Meyer indicated that although mobile remote deposit capture is not presently featured, it will be made available to members imminently.
A $1 billion institution, the San Jose, Calif.-based credit union has 72,000 members.
“Mobile phones have become an integral part of our daily lives, and we wanted to bring our members the convenience of managing their bills while on the go,” said Meriwest CEO Christopher Owen in a statement.
“Our initial expectation was that the bill pay service would appeal to our Gen Y members, but we are seeing strong interest and adoption among baby boomers and our older members as well. Mobile financial services have an appeal that crosses a wide range of members.”
The credit union dates back to 1961 when it was organized to serve IBM employees in San Jose. The present field of membership extends to those who live or work in the Greater Bay area or Tucson, Ariz.
