CUNA Mutual Touts Data Cleanup

CUNA Mutual Group in Madison, Wis. has received ARMA International’s 2012 Cobalt Award for efficiencies gained through a recent records and information management project, the company announced Monday.

The four-year project entailed eliminating 159 terabytes of electronic information, which would fill 70 billion sheets of single-spaced paper, as well as implementing new compliance controls and recycling 1,217 tons of paper, CUNA Mutual Group said.

ARMA International, a corporate record and information management organization based in Overland Park, Kan., said CUNA Mutual Group’s project went beyond data purging and created a sustainable data management system that treats data like any other company asset.

“Clearly, CUNA Mutual has made the cultural shift necessary for an organization to embrace solid records and information management as a foundation for its success,” ARMA International said in a statement.

Steve Koslow, senior vice president and chief ethics and compliance officer for CUNA Mutual Group, commented, “The speed with which information is created today can make managing records in a compliant way challenging. Stale data is no longer a burden, and we are eliminating expenses that can reach into the millions. In addition, superior records management and efficient disposal of unnecessary data frees up capital so we can better serve our policyholders.”
