NerdWallet, a personal finance analysis site, recently anointed seven credit union mobile apps as best of breed in a round-up entitled “Best Credit Union Mobile Apps.”
The author, Laura Edgar, told Credit Union Times she sifted through over 100 apps before picking her winners.
“A lot of apps have the same features,” Edgar said. “This group stood out for offering features above and beyond the norm.”
Making her cut were the following credit unions:
- Genisys Credit Union ($1.4 billion in assets, Auburn Hills, Mich.).
- Enrichment Federal Credit Union ($368 million, Oak Ridge, Tenn.)
- GulfCoastEducators Federal Credit Union($449 million, Pasadena, Texas)
- Police & Fire Federal Credit Union ($4 billion, Philadelphia)
- CoVantageCredit Union ($1 billion, Antigo, Wis.)
- MAX Credit Union ($963 million, Montgomery, Ala.)
- FirstFinancialCredit Union ($63 million, Skokie, Ill.)
Edgar stressed that this round-up’s focus was on apps from smaller credit unions so offerings from behemoths like the $49 billion, Vienna, Va.-based Navy Federal Credit Union and the $15 billion, Arlington, Va.-based Pentagon Federal Credit Union did not figure into her analysis.
In most cases, the honored credit unions offered mobile apps for a range of formats including iPhone, iPad, Android and Kindle Fire, Edgar noted.
Apps that particularly won her attention were ones that offered news about the credit union and also in-app tools for viewing the credit union’s social media posts, for instance.
“These are more ways for the credit union to connect with its members,” Edgar said.
She stressed that in her work, she also looks at many apps from banks.
“Credit union apps are as good, sometimes better. Many are much more member focused.”
