The $3.4 billion Redstone Federal Credit Union won the 2012 Model Bank Award from research consultancy Celent for the Huntsville, Ala., credit union’s use of its core processor’s app store to develop and sell its own solutions.
Redstone has been an active user of the DNAcreator toolkit and DNAappstore collaboration site from Open Solutions Inc., the Glastonbury, Conn., company said.
Open Solutions said the Alabama credit union has developed 21 of the 124 DNAapps currently available on the site. The company said 42 organizations have been certified to create apps and that since its launch in 2011, users of the company’s DNA core processing platform have downloaded more than 700 apps.
Redstone has sold nearly 200 of them, the most of any organization, Open Solutions said. Redstone recently launched its own consultancy to market its tools.
They include an app for mobile remote deposit capture registration, qualification and posting and a lobby management app that calculates member wait times and service needs for member service reps to use as members sign in at a branch.
“The 2012 Model Bank Award seeks to answer the question: What would it look like for a bank to do everything right with today's technology?” said Bob Meara, senior analyst with Boston-based Celent's Banking Group. “With DNAcreator, Redstone has broken the top-down, vendor controlled model of innovation by creating its own custom core extensions and then selling them to other institutions.”
“At Redstone, we are always looking for new ways to improve our operations and member service,” said Harry Gunsallus, Redstone senior vice president. “DNAcreator allows us to quickly turn our ideas into DNAapps that benefit our members, our bottom-line and other community banks and credit unions running DNA.”
Louis Hernandez Jr., Open Solutions chairman/CEO, said, “Redstone Federal Credit Union is well deserving of its Model Bank award. Its DNAapps have helped it and other DNA clients lower costs and enhance member service – a clear demonstration of how revolutionary technology can move our industry forward by enabling innovation and collaboration.”
