Seven Whitefish High School students may have just become themost influential teenagers in northwest Montana after beingselected by WHS from among 232 of their peers tobecome the first members of Whitefish Credit Union's inauguraljunior board of directors.

Their duties as junior board members will include conductingtheir own board meetings, writing articles for WCU's newsletter andimplementing a community service project, said Sue Schenck,Whitefish Credit Union's business development director.

“One of the really important functions of a credit union, andalso part of the credit union philosophy, is financial education,”said Schenck. “This is a great way to get the credit unionphilosophy out there and hopefully have some fun with thesestudents while we're doing it.”

The students, four seniors and three juniors, will also spendtime learning about the 77-year history of the $1.2 billion,Whitefish, Mont.-based WCU and its place in thecommunities of northwest Montana. Guest speakers will teach juniorboard members the grassroots movement that brought about creditunions in America and basic credit union philosophies.
