Central Pennsylvania credit unions were assessing propertydamage and getting back to normal Monday, reopening closed branchesas a result of last week's flooding.

Meanwhile, the Pennsylvania Credit Union Association inrain-soaked Harrisburg, also a river town, said its phone and faxservice were still out today.

CUs across a wide swath of Pennsylvaniaused their websites to alert members to Friday and weekendclosings. The deluge included the Susquehanna River cresting at 42feet at Wilkes-Barre, topping a 1972 record.

Belco Community and Hershey FCU had closed Harrisburg andHummelstown branches and Pennsylvania State Employees CU had totemporarily close its corporate offices. Service 1st inDanville closed its offices on Thursday as did Cross Valley inWilkes-Barre.

“We're all safe today and the dikes held,” said a spokeswomanfor Choice One in Wilkes-Barre. The CU did have to cancel itsMember Appreciation Day on Sunday at an amusement park in Elysburg.The rides and buildings had been damaged by the waters.

“We are in the process of returning the $5 deposit to ourmembers,” said Sue Bat, director of marketing. Under thepromotion, Choice One members were to get $5 refunds once theystepped foot in the park.

In the past, Member Appreciation Day was held in a parking lot“but we decided to try something different” but the weather spoiledthe plans, Bat said.
