Michigan Credit Unions, Detroit, are hosting a 75-part marathon event to provide financial education services to the surrounding community. The weeklong initiative, known as Money Smart Week, was started at a kick-off breakfast held at the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago's Detroit branch. The educational program, originally created in Chicago in 2002, has expanded to Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Wisconsin and Michigan and features a Financial Literacy Legislative Challenge in which 48 lawmakers travel to local schools with credit unions to encourage youth involvement.

Michigan Schools and Government Credit Union, Clinton Township, Mich., held a blood drive to raise money in support of the American Red Cross and the organization's dedication to helping cancer patients, children with blood disorders, and accident victims. The blood drive is held throughout the year at the credit union's main office to raise money for the Red Cross.

Prospera Credit Union, Appleton, Wis., held its first annual community-wide rummage sale at its north Appleton location. The credit union rented out parking spaces for individuals to use to sell their used or other goods on site. With a prime drive-by location and all the communications done by Prospera, community members were excited by the opportunity. Prospera had 21 sellers sign up for the event. Prospera also had a Goodwill donation truck on site and sold concessions such as brats, hamburgers and hot dogs. Proceeds from the rental space and concessions were donated to the Greater Fox Cities Area Habitat for Humanity-a total of $1,015.
