First Citizens' Buys Branch From Bank

Before it fell vacant a year ago, the prominent property in Mattapoisett, an old Massachusetts shipbuilding town, had always been occupied by a bank?most recently Sovereign Bank. But effective Sept. 13, the facility will open as a branch of the $500 million First Citizens' Federal Credit Union of Fairhaven.

Officials of First Citizens' said they were delighted to buy the property from Santander Bank of Spain.

First Citizens' said it is preparing a weeklong grand opening complete with food and prizes. The main event will be a Sept. 25 lunch-hour radio DJ program put on by a local country station.

First Citizens' plans to expand further in the area and will open a second branch next spring at Mashpee on Cape Cod.
