As its former CEO, Gordon Dames took Mountain America Credit Union from a cooperative grappling with a $560,000 loss when he took the helm in 1991 to a $2.5 billion financial institution.
Dames led the Salt Lake City-based CU for 18 years before retiring a few years ago. It was there that Dames was involved in the launch of Member Business Lending LLC, one of the industry's most recognized CUSOs that has consistently placed in the top 10 list of SBA lenders among both CUs and banks.
Prior to joining Mountain America, Dames served as president/CEO of San Diego Credit Union from 1983 to 1991. His career also includes a principal examiner post at NCUA, a position he served in for 12 years.
He has served on several key boards, including chairman of CO-OP Financial Services, a member of WesCorp's board, the Credit Union Task Force in California and the California Credit Union League audit committee. In 2008, CUES recognized his contributions to the industry by naming him its outstanding executive that year. A CUES member since 1983, Dames was named to CUES Chairman's Roundtable in 2006 and in 2009, was inducted into the organization's Hall of Fame. He was also an inductee in the Utah League of Credit Unions' CEO Hall of Fame in 2007.
Dames was hired in January 2009 as senior vice president of national account development at Southwest Business Corp. In his new role, he helps credit unions improve their revenue and efficiencies utilizing various products, services, and strategies that he had employed during his tenure as a credit union CEO.
