Over 100 Indicted for Mortgage Fraud in Florida

Over 100 individuals representing many different facets of the mortgage and real estate industries have been indicted for their roles in different mortgage frauds by the U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Florida.

The individuals charged included mortgage brokers, real estate brokers, realtors, title agents, borrowers, investors and officers and executives with bogus real estate "rescue" firms. The victims of the frauds or attempted frauds were mostly banks, but included some credit unions as well.

Allbritton described the effort his office, along with branch offices of the FBI, brought to alleged mortgage fraud as a "surge" according to press reports, telling reporters: "This initiative sends a clear message that mortgage fraud will not be tolerated. We must protect the integrity of the real estate market in our communities, which is a major contributor to the health of our economy, here and throughout the country."

Individuals in the investigation were alleged to have defrauded GTE Federal Credit Union and the University of South Florida Federal Credit Union.
