Data Breach Spurring Some Card Technology Innovations

The biggest data breach ever so far may not bring any new direct card innovations, such as implanting a chip in a card and requiring a separate personal identification number, but it is encouraging innovation in the way cards are managed.

In January CUNA Mutual Group and Fidelity National Information Systems announced a joint innovation to help credit unions covered by CUNA Mutual's card insurance more efficiently and speedily submit card fraud claims-an approach CUNA Mutual said it wants to roll out to card processing CUSO's as well.

Now, Dynamic Card Solutions announced that credit unions around the country which use its instant card issuing technology have begun deploying specifically to help their members manage their card needs in the face having to close accounts and reissue cards.

One, the $570 million United Heritage Credit Union, headquartered in Austin, Texas, has started offering members whose cards have had to be reissued the option of just walking into a branch and getting their new card in relatively little time. Of the roughly 1,000 card accounts that the CU has had to close and reissue so far because of the breach, more than 60% of the members have opted to get their new cards issued through the branch.
