BEDFORD, Mass. -- Credit unions were not quite as much the apple of phishers' eyes in June, according to RSA Security.
The Internet security specialists at the EMC division's anti-fraud command center said 30% of the "banking entities" hit by phishing attacks that month were federal credit unions, compared with 34% against national banks and 36% against regional banks.
That's a sharp departure from May, when fully half of all phishing attacks in the U.S. were against CUs, RSA said, adding that the June numbers were more typical.
Overall, American institutions attracted 53% of the attacks, while Brazil was a new entry on the list, accounting for 9% of attacks, third behind the United Kingdom, whose financial institutions attracted 11% of all phishing attacks recorded and reported by the AFCC in June.
RSA (www.rsasecurity.com) also said attacks were recorded against 209 different brands in June, including 36 that not been attacked before.
