Children, National Guard Team Up To Send Care Packages to Troops

ALBANY, N.Y. -- It was a team effort to assemble care packages for troops overseas for at Capital Communications Federal Credit Union as children who came to work with their parents and the local National Guard Members in Latham's 3rd battalion 142nd Aviation Regiment worked together to put together the packages.

"We are proud to be able to support our troops overseas with this project, and we felt it would be a good activity to involve the children in during Take Your Child to Work Day," said Bob Bascom, coordinator of the Capital Communications Cares Foundation. "Partnering with National Guard members on the project will make it that much more meaningful for the kids."

Twice a year the Capital Communications Cares Foundation collects items to send to troops who are serving overseas. The packages include, snacks, CDs, games, magazines and batteries.

"Soldiers serving in Iraq and Afghanistan are always happy to receive packages from home," said Public Affairs Officer for the New York National Guard Lt. Col. Eric Durr, who served in Iraq in 2005. "What will make these boxes especially thoughtful are the notes the kids enclosed. Nothing says home more than a heartfelt note from a little boy or girl."

The foundation is celebrating its fifth anniversary this year and has given more than $700,000 in monetary and in-kind donations. Foundation volunteers have given more than 7,500 hours to various charities and organizations in the Capital Region.
