Gen Y Looms as Topic A at June Discovery Conference in Florida

MADISON, Wis. -- All the latest buzz on Generation Y--those born in the 1980s and early 1990s--to grow credit union membership will receive extraordinary treatment at CUNA Mutual Group's annual Discovery Conference June 18-21 in Hollywood, Fla., convention planners reported last week.

The conference, to be held at the Diplomat Resort & Spa, will have eight separate sessions devoted to what has become a priority industry topic. In addition, an Australian entrepreneur and generational consultant will keynote a closing June 21 session.

"Gen Y has already shown to have huge marketplace power, not only in reaching members but employees as well," said Rick Uhlmann, senior manager for media relations. "Acknowledgment of this segment from member and staff perspectives is something credit unions cannot ignore as they plan for the future."

The eight separate Gen Y sessions, far more than were on the 2007 agenda, have such titles as: Gen Y Members for Life: Technology Required!, In Debt We Trust: From Monopoly to Mall Madness in the Credit Card Nation, Student Lending: A Changing Game and Surviving the Workforce Crisis.

On the speaker roster with a Gen Y focus is author Peter Sheahan, a New South Wales consultant on workforce trends and generational change. Sheahan is the author of Generation Y: (Thriving and Surviving) with Generation Y at Work and his new work, FL!P.

CUNA Mutual said this year's conference will have 45 working sessions covering a broad range of CU disciplines.
