U.S. Central Hires Brand-Protection Specialist in Wake of Phish Attacks

LENEXA, Kan. -- U.S. Central Credit Union said Monday it has been using the services of enterprise brand protection specialist MarkMonitor to knock down hack attacks from the Rock Phish organization.

The anonymous group is believed to be responsible for as much as half the phishing attacks now being carried out. The attacks have become increasingly sophisticated by automating its site deployment and management, using development tools that are readily downloadable and hiring botnet vendors to help in the widespread attacks, MarkMonitor said.

The Rock Phish group first targeted $40 billion U.S. Central, the nation's only wholesale corporate credit union, in June.

"Within the first few hours of that first attack we knew we had to do something fast. We instantly realized that it was far too big a job for us to manage internally. It takes multiple team members working around the clock," said Jean Golka, U.S. Central's information technology risk manager.

Since then, San Francisco-based MarkMonitor has been helping U.S. Central and its 26 member corporates detect and shut down the increasingly sophisticated attacks, the company says.

"As these ever-adaptive criminals use the Internet to expand their reach into new markets and verticals, it is the responsibility of the brand holders to protect their brands, customers and revenue from the threats they pose," says Frederick Felman, chief marketing officer at MarkMonitor.
