Discover Survey Shows Hierarchy of Mom Day Spending
RIVERWOODS, Ill. -- A survey from the Discover Card brand has found that men will spend the most money on their wives this coming Mother's Day, the second most on their own mothers, and the smallest amount on their mothers-in-law.
The survey found that men plan to spend an average of $91 on their wife, $74 on their mother and $50 on their mother-in-law for Mother's Day.
The survey also found that 19% of "Mother's Day" shoppers said they intend to purchase a gift card, while twice as many moms indicated that they would like to receive one and 72% would prefer a general purpose gift card as opposed to a store specific one.
In other findings, 58% of the responders cited no expiration date or loss of value as the best features of a gift card. Other favored gift card features included the general purpose card; being able to choose the denomination and Mother's Day art. Interestingly, only 28% cited the ability to emboss the recipient's name and add a message. The majority of respondents said that they tend to spend more on Mother's Day than Father's Day.
