WASHINGTON-CUNA President and CEO Dan Mica encouraged credit union officials to be respectful to the lawmakers they meet with during their visits on Capitol Hill but get their point across. "Be respectful, don't be rude, but be forceful," Mica recommended. "Credit unions don't want this war.Consumers don't want this war.The bankers have to know that Congress doesn't want this war," he said. So the message, Mica emphasized, that credit unions need to get across is to urge the lawmakers to tell the bankers, "Don't come in here and whine about credit unions anymore." A key piece of the argument from bankers is the competition factor. "To the rational bankers-there have to be some out there, I know there are-we are no threat to America's banks," he added. Credit unions represent just 6% of the financial services marketplace, he pointed out, and have for a decade.
