Wanigas Federal Credit Union, Saginaw, Mich., has raised over $4,300 for the American Cancer Society. In addition, the team received awards for most money raised and also for the best decorated campsite. This year, Relay for Life in Saginaw Township raised over $30,000 which will support the life-saving mission of the American Cancer Society through research, education, advocacy and service. Credit Union of Ohio, Columbus, has collected over 210 meals worth of food for the Mid-Ohio FoodBank. All 43 Credit Union of Ohio employees helped by donating canned goods, packaged meals and snack foods to the non-profit organization that delivers much needed meals to families in Central Ohio. Spokane Federal Credit Union, Wash., volunteers took photos, made storybooks, and read to preschoolers for the United Way 12th Annual Days of Caring. Days of Caring, a community event put on by Spokane County United Way, pairs volunteers from local businesses with area non-profit organizations. Spokane FCU worked with Spokane Parents Overcoming Challenges, which offers a variety of programs to benefit families such as finances, child care and development, and nutrition. Topeka Credit Union Foundation, Kan., has donated $2,500 to each of four area agencies to help them continue their community service during a TCUF Benefactor's Breakfast. This year's recipients include Family Service and Guidance Center, Let's Help, Midland Hospice, and The Capper Foundation.Founded in 2004 by the following credit unions: Community America CU;Credit Union 1 of Kansas;Credit Unions United; Educational CU; Kansas Blue Cross Blue Shield CU; and Kansas Super Chief CU, the Foundation's mission is to support organizations conducting philanthropic or charitable purposes for the greater good of its communities. Cabrillo Partners Credit Unions, San Diego, Calif., which is comprised of Cabrillo CU, Sharp CU, and Carlsbad City CU has raised nearly $1,000 to benefit United Cerebral Palsy (UCP).Credit union staffers in teams of 10-12 people got busy raising money by asking family and friends to donate to the cause. Team fundraising rewards ranged from one to three casual dress days, depending on the amount raised. In just two weeks of fundraising, the credit union had a participation level of 97%, higher than any prior fundraising efforts. Alliant Credit Union, Chicago, has recently held a food drive to benefit the Maine Township Community Food Pantry based in Park Ridge, Illinois. According to the credit union the community food pantry's greatest need is during the middle of summer when their shelves go bare. The 477 items collected will help the organization restock in preparation for the winter. Michigan State University Federal Credit Union, East Lansing, has selected The Angel House of Child and Family Services as this year's beneficiary for its community fundraising activities. Everything from auction of theme baskets of tasty treats and innovative items to dressing down days were utilized by the team to raise funds for the Angel House. MSUFCU employees raised $12,155.08 for Angel House. Jeanne D'Arc Credit Union, Lowell, Mass., has unveiled a Summer Youth Reading Incentive Program in its Tyngsboro branch. Due to the excellent response of this pilot program, JDCU plans to rollout the reading program in all of its branches next summer. The program is designed for young JDCU members, grade levels 1 – 8, to increase reading, writing, and comprehension skills. Students are required to read at least one book from an approved book list, and must submit a written book report to be eligible for rewards and prizes provided by JDCU. At the close of the program, a Grand Prize is awarded to the student who has read the most books and has submitted his or her reports meeting the program criteria. South Carolina Federal Credit Union, North Charleston, S.C. has donated $29,500 to the Children's Miracle Network. The contribution exceeds the credit union's expectations by over $8,000. Employees raised the funds through events like cookouts, creative raffles and ice cream socials. The donation will go to the Children's Hospital Fund at MUSC in Charleston, S.C. and the Palmetto Health Foundation in Columbia, S.C. Funds raised will be used for research and prevention of childhood diseases.
