HONOLULU – The imposter "Heartland Credit Union" wave has crashed in the Big Island of Hawaii. The Better Business Bureau of Hawaii and the Hawaii Credit Union League have issued warnings of the newspaper advertisements promoting loans for the fake credit union. According to state credit union leagues, the best defense against such scams is a combination of educating consumers that legitimate loan and credit offers do not require up-front payments and alerting state media outlets of the scam so the fraudulent ads can be pulled. So far scam attempts have made the rounds in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Iowa, Nebraska, Massachusetts, Missouri, Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, Oregon and New Hampshire, and Colorado.
