* 1940 - the credit union is chartered as S.A.D. Federal Credit Union (Sacramento Air Depot). Its FOM was civilian employees of the air depot. * 1953 - the name was changed to Sacramento Air Force Employees FCU to serve civilian employees of McClennan AFB. * 1959 - the name was shortened to S.A.F.E. Federal Credit Union. * 1984 - NCUA allowed FCUs to serve more than one select employer group, and S.A.F.E. FCU began offering membership to multiple employer groups. More than 4,000 are added by 1996. * 1996 - S.A.F.E. FCU merged with McClellan FCU adding the military and enlisted employees of McClellan AFB to its FOM * 1998 - S.A.F.E. FCU converted to a state charter and changed its name to SAFE Credit Union. At the same time, the CU converted to a community-based FOM serving six counties: Sacramento, Placer, El Dorado, Yolo, Yuba, and Sutter. * 2003 - Department of Financial Institutions approves SAFE's request to expand its FOM to include 6 additional counties: Amadore, Butte, Contra Costa, Nevada, San Joaquin, and Solano.
