LATHAM, N.Y. – Add New York to the growing number of states reporting fake credit union advertisements. According to the New York State Credit Union League, an ad for "First Rate Credit Union", which ran in the Mississippi's "Greenwood Democrat" included the non-existent credit union's address in Middletown, N.Y. As in other cases the Middletown address referenced turned out to be residential. The NYSCUL has forwarded the ad to NCUA and the New York State Banking Department. Credit unions or members noting similar cases are encouraged to contact NCUA and their state Banking Department. To date the fake advertisements have appeared in at least nine states.
