GREENSBORO, N.C. – A poll commissioned by the North Carolina Credit Union League shows Elizabeth Dole, the state's Republican candidate for U.S. Senate leading Erskine Bowles, the front runner for the Democratic nomination, by 11 points – 52% to 41% – among likely November voters. The poll was conducted from Sept. 15-18 among 600 registered North Carolina voters by Hickman-Brown Public Opinion Research and Public Opinion Strategies, renowned pollsters for the Democratic and Republican parties, respectively. In other questions, when voters were asked about their generic party preference for congressional candidates, they were split between Republicans and Democrats, 43%-41%. The same applied to candidates for the state legislature, with likely voters split between Republicans and Democrats 42%-41%. The NCCUL said more than 40% of likely voters in North Carolina are credit union members.
