MIAMI - Recently, there were "pots of gold" to be found at North Miami High School. In conjunction with the school's Quisqueya Club Haitian Flag Day celebration, Peoples Credit Union sponsored an essay contest. Each grade had to write about different aspects of Haitian history and culture. "In a school where two thirds of the student population is of Haitian descent, the contest was a great opportunity to not only educate but raise awareness throughout the school," said Peoples CU Director of Marketing and Business Development Rosa Gordon. The credit union awarded students with "pots of gold", glass jars containing the newly minted gold coins, and certificates of recognition. In addition, each first place winner was given the opportunity to open a Young Savers Account with the credit union making an initial deposit of $25.00 in each student's account. Designed for members up to 18 years of age, the Young Savers Account lets children experience first-hand the value of savings. According to Gordon it also helps lay the foundation for children to develop good money habits that will prepare them for the future. "As a credit union, our philosophy has always been `people helping people'. Working with our local high school and rewarding local students for their efforts is just one small step in perpetuating this philosophy," said Jeffrey Miller, CEO of Peoples CU. Peoples CU has $31.2 million in assets and serves 14,507 members. -mbourjolly@cutimes.com
