Internet privacy hearings held by Constitution Subcommittee

WASHINGTON-Representative Bob Barr's (R-Ga.) requested hearings on the subject of "The Fourth Amendment and the Internet" were scheduled (at press time) to be held on April 6 by the Constitution Subcommittee.

Barr requested the hearing late last year following a debate about whether to build law enforcement wiretapping access into the Internet.

Witnesses at the hearing will include Internet Engineering Task Force Chair Fred Baker, Center for Democracy and Technology Counsel Jim Dempsey, ACLU Counsel Greg Nojeim, Internet Alliance Director Jeff Richards, and Deputy Associate Attorney General Kevin DeGregory. Also testifying are law professor Clifford Fishman, and attorneys Nicole Wong and Robert Corn-Revere.

"It is important we clarify the manner in which time-tested Fourth Amendment protections apply in the electronic world," said Barr. "Unless we get a handle on this, and provide some guidance for, and limitations on, government monitoring of the Internet, personal privacy will be an early casualty of this new century."
