The Defense Credit Union Council (DCUC) threw its support behind John Crews' nomination to the NCUA Board while using the confirmation process to spotlight a broad range of policy issues affecting credit unions and military communities.

In a letter to Senate Banking Committee Chairman Tim Scott (R-S.C.) and Ranking Member Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), DCUC praised Crews' reputation for stakeholder engagement and transparency, describing him as a regulator willing to listen to differing viewpoints and consider the operational realities facing financial institutions.

"DCUC is pleased to support the nomination of John Crews to serve on the NCUA Board," Chief Advocacy Officer Jason Stverak wrote, adding that Crews has earned a reputation for maintaining an "open-door policy" and thoughtfully engaging with stakeholders across the financial services landscape.

Beyond its endorsement, DCUC outlined more than 50 questions and policy topics it believes senators should explore during the confirmation process. Those issues include preserving the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund, modernizing field-of-membership rules, reducing regulatory burden on smaller institutions, improving examination consistency and strengthening the Central Liquidity Facility.

The organization also urged lawmakers to examine Crews' views on emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and digital assets, federal preemption authority, third-party vendor oversight, governance modernization and credit union acquisitions of community banks.

Given DCUC's focus on defense and veteran-serving credit unions, the letter placed particular emphasis on military financial readiness, access to financial services for servicemembers and veterans, preserving credit union access on military installations and expanding lending opportunities for veteran-owned small businesses.

DCUC said it looks forward to working with Crews if confirmed and expressed confidence that his leadership style would help foster open dialogue between regulators and the credit union industry.
