Houston

Shell Federal Credit Union is significantly expanding its field of membership, opening eligibility to more individuals, families and businesses across the Greater Houston area as the credit union pushes deeper into one of the nation's fastest-growing metropolitan regions.

The expansion, launched alongside Shell FCU's new "You Deserve More" campaign, broadens access to the $693 million-asset credit union, which currently serves roughly 69,000 members through 14 branches across the Houston market.

Shell FCU said the move will allow more consumers and businesses to access checking accounts, loans, digital banking services and financial education programs through expanded community eligibility rules tied to where individuals live, work, worship, attend school or conduct business.

"For generations, Shell FCU has been built on the philosophy of people serving people," said Jose Rodriguez, president/CEO. "This expansion allows us to extend that promise even further."

The growth effort comes as Houston-area population trends continue accelerating. Harris County alone is home to nearly 5 million residents, according to recent U.S. Census Bureau estimates, making it the third-most populous county in the nation.

Credit unions nationwide have increasingly pursued field-of-membership expansions to reach underserved populations, grow deposits and compete with larger regional banks.

Shell FCU said the expanded membership structure also includes streamlined online consumer and business onboarding tools and eligibility through its Community Impact Fund membership option.
