Wisconsin Credit Union League President and CEO Sarah Wainscott used the opening session of the organization's 2026 convention in Madison to connect the credit union movement's history with the challenges facing the industry today.

Addressing nearly 500 attendees at the league's 92nd annual meeting and expo, Wainscott emphasized the importance of collaboration among credit unions, leagues and system partners as the industry navigates rapid change.

"The financial well-being of Wisconsinites is our collective responsibility," Wainscott told attendees. "We can't make progress toward financial well-being for all unless we do that together."

Wisconsin CU League President/CEO Sarah Wainscott addresses the crowd during the annual convention in Madison, May 14, 2026.

Much of the speech focused on Madison's historic role in the development of the national credit union movement, including the city's ties to CUNA, CUNA Mutual and Credit Union National Association leadership dating back to the 1930s and 1940s.

Wainscott also referenced historical debates over representation and unity within the movement, drawing parallels to modern discussions surrounding the needs of small and large credit unions.

"The movement stuck together," she said while recounting disputes from a 1936 Wisconsin convention. "They saw the value in partnership, trust and mutual success."

The convention continues through Friday with leadership development sessions, advocacy discussions and industry networking events.
