Reflecting on the past year, we all have endured a geopolitical and economic environment that has been marked by extreme turbulence. We all know the trends – AI-driven displacement, rising unemployment, inflation and declining consumer confidence. In 2026, let's choose to focus on how we can collectively turn the year into a productive, healthy and fulfilling one.
To summarize the thinking of one of the most successful business investors of our time, Warren Buffett believes that happiness is related to the following: Doing what you love, aligning your activities with the things you care about and are good at, feeling like you belong and choosing to be more optimistic."Decide what you would like your obituary to say and live the life to deserve it," is a wise quote from his most recent retirement letter.
Seeing harsh realities should not paralyze your abilities to continue to stay positive, grow, learn and evolve. Selecting your battles based on your values is critical, as not all issues ultimately matter. Determining what's important and why will enable you to prioritize, manage your time and persevere with the intense focus that is required. Build relationships with those who give you positive energy. Associate only with people and clients who share your values. To quote Warren Buffett once again, "You can't make a good deal with a bad person."
Achieving happiness does not just happen; it takes work. Preparation is often tedious, but nothing happens without it. The smartest, most successful people figure out how to control their focus through discipline. Making a conscious decision to be happy is crucial. This involves being good to oneself and thinking positively. Figuring out what calms you, whether it be music, art, gardening or taking care of others, will help you to achieve your goals. Valuing relationships will put you in a position to share ideas, develop friendships, increase your sense of belonging and experience the journey of life with others.
Committing acts of kindness and giving back to those in need or less fortunate will increase your own happiness. Nearly half of all Americans aren't confident they can meet their most basic needs of food and health care. If you are blessed to not fall into this category, the ability and desire to give back will provide the spiritual energy that comes from helping others. Your ability to change lives for the better will not only influence your own levels of contentment but add value to those in need for future generations. As Warren Buffett reminds us, "Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago."
Who we are today is not who we may be tomorrow. Staying relevant will help you to evolve effectively, and this involves studying and work. I often need to read articles three or four times to truly understand them. Don't give up. Push yourself to learn as this is the only way you will continue to grow.
Companies like the innovative clothing brand Rhône will outperform the competition not only through the quality and beauty of its products, but also through its positive and uplifting messaging. Slogans on its garments like "forever forward" provide inspiration and positive energy. The sneaker brand On has selected a brilliant name that is not only fashion-forward but also conveys a message that aligns with thriving in today's world. Congratulations to these forward-thinking companies that embrace and reflect the pulse of today's global consumer.
Achieving happiness takes focus and determination. But it's worth the effort. Live each day to the fullest, knowing you have done the best you could. For the greatest impact, understand that people are busy and communication is often missed. Make your messages clear and brief. Find the right vehicles and timing in which to share and communicate. Don't be overly critical. Use your insights on those things that you can influence and don't dwell on the rest.
Einstein explained that balance comes from movement, not stillness. This is a reminder to accept change and embrace it as an important process in life. He states, "Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving." Staying engaged is what it's all about. Select what you choose to focus on and where you choose to spend your time wisely.
We want to end this message by thanking those who lift us up every day, whether it be our family, friends or clients. We appreciate you and feel extremely blessed to have you in our lives.
