DCUC's President/CEO Anthony Hernandez speaks during Defense Matters event, March 3, 2026.
The Defense Credit Union Council (DCUC) convened credit union leaders, policymakers and military figures this week for its annual "Defense Matters" session in Washington, focusing on legislative priorities, payment system debates and the financial needs of military families.
Taking place at the Marriott Marquis, the event came as the nation prepares for its 250th anniversary and during National Invest in Veterans Week. DCUC President/CEO Anthony Hernandez said the gathering delivered timely insights for credit unions serving military communities.
"Our goal is always to provide actionable intelligence and meaningful dialogue that empowers our movement and industry to better serve their members," Hernandez said.
The program featured remarks from retired Brig. Gen. Enoch "Woody" Woodhouse, one of the last surviving Tuskegee Airmen, who reflected on the role credit unions play in supporting financial well-being and community resilience.
Policy discussions included updates on interchange legislation and the Durbin-Marshall proposal. Nick Simpson of the Electronic Payments Coalition warned potential mandates could harm smaller financial institutions and the consumers they serve.
DCUC Chief Advocacy Officer Jason Stverak and other policy experts also outlined legislative opportunities, including possible credit union provisions in a housing bill and ongoing efforts to modernize the Central Liquidity Facility.
Rep. Mike Haridopolos (R-Fla.) urged credit union leaders to maintain direct communication with lawmakers to highlight real-world economic conditions facing their members.
