Charter Oak Federal Credit Union in Waterford, Conn., announced late last week that Craig Knell has been selected as its next president/CEO, succeeding longtime CEO Brian Orenstein, who is retiring after 21 years of leadership.
Knell, a U.S. Navy veteran with extensive experience in financial management, credit union operations and federal regulatory oversight, will take the helm of the $1.6 billion institution as it continues to expand its footprint and enhance member services across Eastern Connecticut.
He most recently served as COO and CFO at Nutmeg State Federal Credit Union ($716 million, Rocky Hill, Conn.), where he helped lead growth in membership, financial performance and technology modernization. His background also includes years with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, where he conducted risk and governance examinations for institutions ranging from $300 million to $20 billion in assets.

“Craig’s deep understanding of financial institutions, combined with his commitment to servant leadership and innovation, makes him the ideal person to guide our organization into its next chapter,” Board Chairman Guy Henry said.
Knell holds a degree in economics from Central Connecticut State University and is completing his Certified Chief Executive designation through the CUES CEO Institute. His leadership achievements have earned him distinctions including the FDIC Mission Achievement Award and recognition in Hartford Business Journal’s 40 Under Forty.
Beyond his professional expertise, Knell is active in community service, serving as Board Treasurer for Ben Bronz Academy and participating in local veterans’ and neighborhood organizations.
“I am honored and humbled to lead Charter Oak during this exciting time,” Knell said. “Our mission to serve our members, employees and communities with excellence and integrity will remain at the heart of everything we do.”
