America's Credit Unions sign at GAC 2024.

After more than a decade leading the credit union movement, Jim Nussle, outgoing president/CEO of America’s Credit Unions, stepped down Friday, marking the end of a transformative era for the industry’s top advocacy organization.

In a farewell message to members Friday afternoon, Nussle reflected on the credit union difference, praising the movement’s commitment to “people helping people” as more than a slogan, but a mission that has driven legislative victories and strengthened communities nationwide.

“When I first encountered credit unions as a new Member of Congress, I didn’t fully appreciate what this movement stood for,” Nussle wrote. “Credit unions are bold, relentless advocates for people … living proof that financial services can be built on trust, integrity and community.”

Nussle, who oversaw the historic 2023 merger of CUNA and NAFCU into America’s Credit Unions, called the unification “one of the most significant milestones in our history,” creating a stronger, more coordinated voice for advocacy and modernization.

He highlighted the organization’s recent policy wins, including protecting credit unions’ tax status and expanding their ability to serve members, while emphasizing that the movement’s real strength lies in its human impact.

“As Washington continues to change, unity will remain our greatest strength,” Nussle said, expressing confidence in his successor, Scott Simpson, to lead the organization forward.

“It’s been the honor of a lifetime to serve alongside you,” Nussle concluded. “I’ll always be proud to have been part of this story and can’t wait to watch where you take it next.”
