Time ticks on during the government shutdown.

The Defense Credit Union Council (DCUC) issued two major statements this week, applauding federal actions to support servicemembers and modernize consumer protection rules critical to the credit union industry.

First, DCUC commended the administration for securing funds to ensure active-duty military personnel receive pay despite the ongoing government shutdown. The group also urged officials to extend the same assurances to members of the U.S. Coast Guard, who often face uncertainty during funding lapses.

“This is welcome news for our men and women in uniform and their families, who should never bear the burden of political gridlock,” Jason Stverak, DCUC's chief advocacy officer, said. “Every branch of our Armed Forces deserves the guarantee that their pay will not be disrupted.”

DCUC also emphasized the important role of defense credit unions during the shutdown, citing emergency assistance programs such as low-interest loans, skip-a-pay options and financial counseling designed to keep military families financially secure.

In a separate release, DCUC praised the Federal Communications Commission for advancing reforms to the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA), which the group called a “positive step forward” for credit unions serving defense communities. The FCC’s proposal would clarify consent protocols, streamline opt-out procedures and eliminate outdated restrictions, ensuring financial institutions can contact members quickly about fraud alerts or security issues.

“These reforms recognize a fundamental truth,” Stverak said. “The regulatory framework must be practical, transparent and workable.”

DCUC pledged to continue advocating for rules that balance strong consumer protections with operational flexibility, a combination it said is vital to maintaining financial readiness for military members and their families.
