Navy Federal staff in Arlington, Texas joined by President/CEO Dietrich Kuhlmann.
Navy Federal Credit Union marked a major milestone last week, officially welcoming its 15 millionth member during a celebration at its Arlington, Texas branch. President/CEO Dietrich Kuhlmann joined local employees to commemorate the achievement, calling it a testament to the institution’s enduring member-first philosophy.
“This is a tremendous milestone, one we believe is driven by Navy Federal's ongoing investments in member service and our focus on the programs and products meant to support members at every stage of their financial lives,” Kuhlmann said in a LinkedIn post announcing the news.
Founded in 1933 by seven Navy Department employees in Washington, D.C., Navy Federal has grown over 92 years into the largest natural-person credit union in the United States, serving active duty personnel, veterans, Department of Defense employees, contractors and their families. What began as a small cooperative to help fellow civil servants access affordable financial services has expanded to a global network of more than 370 branches, supported by 25,000 employees worldwide and a 24/7 U.S.-based contact center.
Kuhlmann credited both the credit union’s members and its workforce for the sustained growth. “I want to thank our members for continually placing their trust in us. And I also want to thank and acknowledge the 25,000 Navy Federal team members worldwide. Without them, none of this is possible,” he wrote.
The 15 million-member milestone reflected Navy Federal’s steady expansion of its field of membership to include all branches of the armed services, veterans and their families, while maintaining the principles that guided its founders: Member ownership, financial stability and security.
