The NCUA has released its staff draft budget for 2026–2027, posting the proposal on its website and submitting it for publication in the Federal Register. The agency said it is accepting public comments through Oct. 24.
The proposed combined budget for 2026 totals $313.8 million, representing a 20.6% decrease from the 2025 budget. The reductions were largely attributed to three drivers: A 23% cut in staffing, a 34.1% decrease in contracted services and a 13.4% reduction in employee travel expenses.
The budget proposal outlined three separate categories. The operating budget stood at $292.4 million, while the capital budget totaled $18.1 million, including $10 million earmarked for implementing the NCUA’s 2026 reorganization plan and upgrading systems to improve efficiency. In addition, the Share Insurance Fund administrative budget was set at $3.3 million.
Stakeholders were encouraged to submit comments on Docket #NCUA-2025-0543 via the Federal eRulemaking Portal. The agency asked that recommendations be specific and actionable.
A notice regarding the public hearing on the proposed budget will be issued at a later date.
