The count of credit union branches and other offices at the end of June was about the same as December, and exactly equaled the count in December 2019.
A CU Times analysis of NCUA data showed credit unions had 22,015 branches and other offices on June 30, including 50 on overseas military bases. The count grew by 31 from March 31, which followed a similar loss from December to March.
Credit unions lost 449 offices (-2%) from December 2019 to December 2020 and since then have regained 449 (+2.1%).

Most of the March-to-June gain came from the Pacific Northwest and the east south central states. The states in those areas with the biggest gains were:
- Washington had 650 branches in June, 13 (+2%) more than March. It lost eight branches (-1.3%) from December 2019 to December 2020, and since then has gained 57 (+9.6%).
- Oregon had 377 branches in June, 8 (+2.2%) more than March. It lost two branches (-0.6%) from December 2019 to December 2020, and since then has gained 35 (+10.2%).
- Kentucky had 238 branches in June, 7 (+3%) more than March. It lost one branches (-0.4%) from December 2019 to December 2020, and since then has gained 12 (+5.3%).
- Tennessee had 536 branches in June, 5 (+0.9%) more than March. It lost 15 branches (-2.8%) from December 2019 to December 2020, and since then has gained 18 (+3.5%).
In other branch news:
- Bay Federal Credit Union of Capitola, Calif. ($1.8 billion in assets, 93,174 members) announced Sept. 11 that it had opened a branch in Marina, 25 miles south of Capitola on Monterey Bay, which in turn is 35 miles south of San Jose. “Bay Federal strategically chose to build a branch in the beautiful Promenade at The Dunes shopping center in Marina to provide more people in Monterey County access to local banking services,” President/CEO Carrie Birkhofer said. NCUA data showed it had seven branches and other offices on June 30, unchanged from March.
- Corda Credit Union of Cedar Rapids, Iowa ($721 million in assets, 25,784 members) announced Sept. 3 that it has opened a branch in North Liberty, Iowa, about 20 miles south of Cedar Rapids. The 5,046-square-foot branch was the first branch in Johnson County for Corda, which changed its name from Linn Area Credit Union in May 2024. “This is a major milestone for Corda,” President/CEO Paula O’Rourke said. “Opening our first branch outside Linn County reflects the vision behind our name change and our commitment to growing with our communities.” It had four branches in June, unchanged from March.
- Nusenda Credit Union of Albuquerque, N.M. ($4.8 billion in assets, 285,768 members) opened a new branch in June in the fast-growing Eastlake area of El Paso, Texas. It was Nusenda’s fifth branch in El Paso. It had 31 branches in June, three more than a year earlier and one fewer than in March.
- Oregon State Credit Union of Corvallis ($2.7 billion in assets, 150,198 members) announced Sept. 3 that it will open a new branch this fall in Wilsonville in the northern Willamette Valley. President/CEO Gary Schuette II said many members live or work in the Portland metro area, and the new Wilsonville branch will be more convenient for them. “This new branch is part of our long-term plan for healthy growth to enhance service, access and products for our members,” he said. It had 15 branches in June, unchanged from March.
- Patriot Federal Credit Union of Chambersburg, Pa. ($1.2 billion in assets, 80,241 members) announced Sept. 11 that it will hold a grand opening Oct. 18-25 for its new branch in Greencastle, Pa., 11 miles south of Chambersburg in south central Pennsylvania. It had 11 branches in June, unchanged from March.
- Hawaii State Federal Credit Union of Honolulu ($2.9 billion in assets, 137,160 members) reopened a branch Monday at 818 Ke’eaumoku Street at the base of the former headquarters of HMSA Employees’ Federal Credit Union, which Hawaii State FCU acquired Jan. 1. HMSA accounts were fully integrated into the Hawaii State FCU system on Sept. 1. It had 15 branches in June, unchanged from March.
