In our fourth year of the Luminaries Awards program, CU Times is thrilled to announce that we have put together a group of brilliant industry minds to join our judging panel. These six seasoned executives bring a wealth of knowledge from different facets of the financial services industry, with career paths that range from credit union management to consulting, marketing, community development and research.

Their expertise will play a critical role in the success of the 2025 CU Times Luminaries Awards program, which aims to celebrate top credit unions, industry executives, teams, CUSOs, credit union-supporting organizations and the young professionals striving to make a difference in the credit union space.

Without further delay, we are honored to introduce you to the CU Times 2025 Luminaries Awards judges, who will be assisting us with selecting this year's winners.

Cathie Mahon: President/CEO of Inclusiv

Cathie Mahon has led Inclusiv since 2012, overseeing a period of dramatic growth and expansion of the organization and network. She previously served as Deputy Commissioner at the NYC Department of Consumer Affairs, where she started and led New York City’s Office of Financial Empowerment (OFE). Mahon also was a co-founder of the Cities for Financial Empowerment Coalition and Fund and remains an active Board member. What’s more, Mahon has worked as a consultant on issues of community development, financial empowerment and asset building; was the founding coordinator of the Asset Funders Network; and served as a lead researcher for the Aspen Institute Economic Opportunities Program. She has served on the Boards of Lower East Side People’s Federal Credit Union and Transfiguration Parish Federal Credit Union.

David Tuyo: President/CEO of TwinStar Credit Union

David Tuyo has served as President/CEO of TwinStar Credit Union in Olympia, Wash., since May 1, 2025. Tuyo has 25 years of financial services experience and previously served as President/CEO of University Credit Union in Los Angeles, a position he held since 2017. Under his leadership, UCU more than doubled its assets and members while significantly expanding its geographic footprint. Throughout his career, Tuyo has held senior level positions at various financial institutions including Power Financial Credit Union, USAlliance Federal Credit Union and PenAir Federal Credit Union, among others. Tuyo earned his Doctor of Business Administration in Leadership & Organizational Behavior from California Southern University and an MBA in Economics from Mississippi State University.

Ron Shevlin: Chief Research Officer at Cornerstone Advisors

Ron Shevlin has been a management consultant for more than 25 years, working with leading financial services, consumer products, retail and manufacturing firms all over the world. As Chief Research Officer at Cornerstone Advisors, Shevlin calls on his analytical acumen to author a variety of corporate and commissioned research reports. Considered one of the banking industry’s most notable experts, Shevlin writes weekly for Forbes and has published hundreds of articles for his Snarketing blogA seasoned professional speaker, Shevlin’s insights and quirky sense of humor are in high demand for trade events and podcasts. Shevlin previously served in roles at Aite Group, Epsilon and Forrester. He is the author of Smarter Bank: Why Money Management is More Important than Money Movement.

Melissa Ashley: President/CEO at Corporate One Federal Credit Union

A visionary and steadfast leader, Melissa Ashley is a strategic driver of growth in her role as President/CEO at Corporate One Federal Credit Union in Columbus, Ohio. Ashley joined Corporate One in 1999. During her time with the organization, she has served in various roles, including controller, vice president of finance and EVP/CFO. Ashley serves on the Board of Directors of two of Corporate One’s wholly owned CUSOs, Lucro Commercial Solutions and Sherpa Technologies. She also serves on two of The Clearing House’s committees, the RTP Business Committee and the Rules Enforcement Committee, and is a board member for eDOC Innovations. From 2019-2024, Ashley served on the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland’s Community Depository Institutions Advisory Council (CDIAC). A Certified Public Accountant in the state of Ohio, she worked at a Big Four accounting firm before joining Corporate One.

Tammy Schultz: EVP of Sales and Marketing for TruStage

Tammy Schultz is Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing for the insurance, investment and technology provider TruStage. Schultz joined TruStage in 2021 as part of the acquisition of Preplanning Solutions from Assurant. Since then, she has excelled in various leadership roles within the company, including leading the Preplanning Solutions business and leading the sales organization, where she has been actively involved in the credit union system, participating in league and system partner meetings, CEO strategy round table discussions and industry events. Schultz graduated from South Dakota State University with a Bachelor of Arts in Advertising and Journalism and holds a master’s degree in industrial and organizational psychology from Purdue University, is a Fellow of the Life Management Institute (LOMA), achieved her CUDE from the National Credit Union Foundation and serves as an advisor to the Board of the Filene Research Institute.

Jeff Rendel: President of Rising Above Enterprises

As President of Rising Above Enterprises, Rendel works with financial services providers that want entrepreneurial results in sales, service and strategy. Each year, he addresses, advises and facilitates for nearly 100 financial institutions and their business partners. He previously served as a federal banking regulator with the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. As a past financial services executive, he oversaw the strategic operations of a community bank, directing corporate initiatives and helping guide the bank to record growth, market share and financial results. He also represented financial institutions as a chief lobbyist to Congress. A highly sought after and accomplished speaker, he is a professional member of the National Speakers Association (NSA) and has earned the NSA’s Certified Speaking Professional (CSP) designation. Fewer than 2% of the world’s speakers hold this achievement.

Natasha Chilingerian: Executive Editor at CU Times

Natasha Chilingerian has been immersed in the credit union industry for over a decade. She first joined CU Times in 2011 as a freelance writer, and following a two-year hiatus from 2013-2015, during which time she served as a communications specialist for Xceed Financial Credit Union (now Kinecta Federal Credit Union), she re-joined the CU Times team full-time as managing editor. She was promoted to executive editor in 2019. She currently serves as co-host of the “Shared Accounts With CU Times” podcast and the annual Luminaries Awards in Orlando, and covers People and Community news, cybersecurity, fintech partnerships, marketing, workplace culture, leadership, DEI, branch strategies, digital banking and more for CU Times. In the earlier days of her career, Chilingerian focused on news and lifestyle journalism, serving as a writer and editor for numerous regional publications in Oregon, Louisiana, South Carolina and the San Francisco Bay Area.

Michael Ogden: Editor-in-Chief at CU Times

As Editor-in-Chief of CU Times since 2016, Michael Ogden has led the editorial team in all aspects of content strategy and execution, including the creation of the publication’s exclusive and proprietary research database of the credit union industry’s economic landscape. Under Ogden’s leadership, CU Times has successfully shifted to an all-digital editorial product with new focuses on the payments, fraud, lending and regulatory beats. Most recently, he introduced a data-focused editorial product for subscribers that breaks down credit union issues into hard data, allowing for a deeper and more factual narrative for readers. In 2024, he launched the “Shared Accounts With CU Times” podcast, which offers a fresh, inside-the-newsroom perspective through interviews with leaders from the credit union industry and the regulatory world. His background includes years as a radio and TV anchor/reporter and a public relations and digital/social media manager, where he covered the food and music industries, as well as cooperatives and credit unions. Over the years, he has launched numerous exclusive video and podcast series, including a successful series of interactive backstage interviews with musicians at music festivals, showcasing his social media and live streaming production skills.
