More than 350 people were on hand earlier this month as the Eric Zapata Community Memorial was unveiled in Kalamazoo Mall. Zapata was a 10-year Kalamazoo police veteran and father of three when he was shot and killed while on duty on April 18, 2011.
The memorial project's leadership included the $422 million Kellogg Community Credit Union in nearby Battle Creek, Mich. Officer Zapata was the first policeman lost in the line of duty in the city of Kalmazoo, Mich.
